12 Things To Do in 2012
It’s that time of the year again. January 1st is marked as a blank slate – every 365 days, a fresh start… a do over. It’s the day that has the ability to erase the past and see the future through a rose colored lens. New Year’s Day is a day that fools you into feeling like you have some sense of control over your life. But how long do you remain loyal to your resolutions? Exactly. This year, do this – and stick to it:
Get a change jar for an end of the year reward
Stash your change. I know it’s a super cliche piece of advice – but it works; that McDonalds change WILL add up! We’re talking hundreds of dollars. As you watch the pile rise (I suggest getting a see through bin) you’ll find yourself dropping the occasional bills, too. Working towards something specific makes working worth it. If you’ve got a bad habit you need to kick, use this change jar as an incentive. It’s science…rewards work.
Make specific goals
Research shows setting specific goals works better than general ones (duh). For instance, instead of saying, “This year I’m going to get skinny,” aim to lose 1 lb a week. Short baby goals make the end result seem more attainable. If you plan to climb corporate ladder, start by making it a point to get to know everyone in the office.
Find a mentor
There’s a reason How-to books sell as well as they do: everyone wants to know how you did it, so they can do it… better. Find someone who has done what you’re dreaming to do, pick their brain, and make it your own. Preparation is key when it comes to conquering your dreams.
Invest in your body
Your body is a temple. It is what gets you up in the morning and takes you from Point A to Point B. It’s your weapon against the opposite sex; It’s the house you’ll live in until you die; It’s everyone’s first impression of you. Don’t sign up for a gym if you know it’ll only pointlessly deduct a monthly fee from your already thinning bank account. Instead, buy a couple of dumbbells and dance naked in your living room. Buy clothes that fit, not ones that sculpt an award winning muffin top. Buy shoes that instantly brighten your day. Just treat your goods well, they’re the only ones you’ve got. Exercise, eat well and cut down on the drugs and alcohol.
Browse craigslist for your dream job
Crucial. This year, when you get home from your mediocre to piece of shit job, browse craigslist. Just looking for a better job is going to brighten your day. If you find something you like, apply. What’s the worst that can happen? You get interviewed and actually get it? If your dream job is something a little more.. artsy, resolve to devote at least half of your free time to it. By keeping up with what you WANT to do, what you HAVE to do won’t seem so pointless. Look at it as it giving you the ability (paid rent) to make your dreams come true; struggling artists have the best success stories.
Fall in love
If there’s one thing you have to do this year, it’s to fall in love. If even for a night.. fall in love. If you’re in a relationship, fall in love again. Falling in love is one of the most invigorating feelings.. ever. For once, don’t think about the potential pitfall.. just.. fall. You’ll reintroduce magic where it is needed most.
Listen to people
Every. Single. Person in the world would benefit from listening to others more. I don’t mean to say you talk to much. I mean, you don’t listen enough. Try not to interrupt. Learn. Ask questions and listen to the answers. Analyze the different thought patterns around you. You will become a much better rounded individual for it.
Make a bucket list
Because what’s life if all you do is work to pay the rent? You don’t want to be that sad son of a bitch who never went cage diving with white sharks because your brother got you that job that was so hard to get. Just like the points above, setting specific goals will make work a lot more meaningful and decidedly easier to bare. Life is not about living to work; it’s about working to live.
Forgive an ex
Take your pick – bastards. Find one and forgive him. Start at the bottom of the barrel if you must. Whatever you do, and however you do it, you will grow so much as an individual by learning to forgive. By doing so, you’ll really let go of the past to finally embrace the future. And isn’t that the whole point of a New Year’s Resolution?
Explore your sexuality. Some readers are probably like, But if I masturbate more, I won’t have time for anything at all! The point of this resolution is to get to know yourself, intimately, while all the while boosting your confidence. You’ll be better in bed, more confident in public and a lot more fun to be around after a long day of work.
Tell the people you love that you love them
Because the last thing you want to have to do is say I wish I would have told him, now he’ll never know. Let go of whatever is holding you back from showing affection and embrace the fact you’re capable of love. I had a really scary labor this past October and when I survived it, all my friends and family came to me with open arms. My thought? Had I died, they would have never known how much they mean to me. And hey, isn’t 2012 supposed to be the end of the world, anyway?
